Code of practice for safety at powered doors for pedestrian use - Part 1. General Executive summary Guidance and recommendations on general safety at powered pedestrian door installations. Abstract This British Standard, a part of the BS series, provides guidance to manufacturers, suppliers, installers, specifiers, occupiers and property owners on the general recommendations for the provision, installation, safe operation and maintenance of powered door systems with a view to safeguarding traffic against the risk of accidents. Although this code of practice is not intended to include industrial type powered doors and powered turnstiles, gates and barriers, the guidance given may be helpful for such installations. This British Standard is not intended to cover the manufacture or design of powered door operating systems except where the products, components or devices have a bearing on the question of safety, nor does it cover the application of powered doors to specific installations. History and related standards This British Standard together with Parts 2 and 3, supersedes BS which is withdrawn.

EN exists as a guide for a generic standard throughout Europe. Countries that have existing codes of practice, ie: the UK with BS , EN is viewed as a minimum standard and is implemented where the BS falls short.

If our existing BS exceeds the requirements of EN then we follow the higher standard. The requirements laid out in EN are not back dateable and only apply to new installations after 1st April System modifications that include the replacement of BOTH the control unit and the motor during the same sequence of works must then comply with EN Replacement of the motor and control board carried out separately will be viewed as maintenance and will not be required to comply.

At the end of the project the commissioning engineer will complete his section that confirms that the door complies with the design requirements and it will then be issued for inclusion in the building Safety File. This booklet is to be issued to the client and must be kept on site NOT within the door. During all service, repair and maintenance visits, all works carried out and any changes to the operational parameters must be logged.

If this booklet goes missing or is not available during a visit a new one should be issued at the customers cost. Additionally a BS check sheet commissioning sheet must be completed yearly.

This is acheived by sending a signal down a separate cable that tests the sensor and cabling by switching the sensor off for 10mS, which is then received on the control board. When connected to the Fire Alarm escape doors no longer have this requirement. However if a door is commissioned prior to an alarm connection being established, the door will not comply and should be de-commissioned until the alarm interface is available.

Escape doors that are not regularly used should have a redundant system installed. This is not required if the client tests the door operation once a week, this procedure must then be documented. Locking Whenever a door has a locking facility this must only be accessible via the use of a key or an access code. Key pads with free access to all are no longer acceptable.
