However, this exercise introduces the reader to a lot more. I can read music very slowly. The note values have to be tapped out for every measure. Needless to say… I have a lot of work to do in the music reading category. Having the bass line on the C. Note: This bass line can be removed by isolating the speaker balance to one side I ended up simply looking at the patterns of notes to keep my place in the song.

I can only hope that my sight reading will get better as I go along. Bass Aerobics Workout 1 — John F. Hebert While this exercise at first seemed elementary, it did remind me of some rudimentary elements of playing the bass that I had forgotten.

This exercise reminded me of how important silence is to music. The pauses between notes may seem unimportant at first glance, but as you make the music written in the workout, their significance stands out more and more.

For example: When I attempt to create a fill for a song, I count out the beats and try to fill in every note to get me to the next chord. By doing this, I am missing out on a chance to create something that the audience will remember. In return, my fills have become nothing but fillers. In addition, the chromatic steps taken in this workout are not my usual chromatic walks up or down.

By locking this workout into my memory, I am creating additional musical vocabulary that I can recall when needed. I have done just that. Some days I would spend hours on this exercise and others days I would only have fifteen minutes or so. I am going to move on to the next workout, but I am still going to run through this one at least once a day for a while. If you have any experience with this book, I would love to hear about it.
